Description
"BLUE DOMED CHURCHES IN OIA SANTORINI - Mini Cityscape 08 " by Mona Edulesco.
Miniature Palette Knife Oil Painting 20x20cm (8x8 inches) realized in the impasto technique. This modern impressionist painting is part of a series of cityscapes inspired by my recent trip to Greece.
This one captures the view towards the two blue domed churches of Agios Spyridonas and Anastaseos (“Resurrection” in Greek) in Oia Village, Santorini.
The first time I discovered the magic of Greece was in 1998… I went back in 2001 for my Erasmus architecture scholarship and I spent there almost a year. I traveled again to the Cyclades islands in the summer of 2017 to get more inspiration for my paintings and to enjoy those wonderful places.
I fell in love with Santorini from the very first moment… with the magic of the place, with the amazing light, the breathtaking views, the colors, the unique minimalist architecture … A fairy tale setting surrounded by the sea… Everything there impressed me and inspired me so much.

Santorini, classically Thera, and officially Thira, is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2011 census population of 15,550.
The traditional architecture of Santorini is similar to that of the other Cyclades, with low-lying cubical houses, made of local stone and whitewashed or limewashed with various volcanic ashes used as colours.
Oia or Ia is a small village and former community in the South Aegean on the islands of Thira (Santorini) and Therasia, in the Cyclades, Greece. It covers the whole island of Therasia and the northwesternmost part of Santorini, which it shares with the municipal unit of Santorini. It is built on the steep slope of the caldera and the houses and restaurants are built into niches carved into the caldera on the seaward side. There are narrow passageways and a central square. The sunlight hours in this village are much longer than in the Fira town. Its paths are very narrow and hence gets congested during the tourist season. The idyllic surroundings of the town have a complex of white washed blue domed churches and charming, traditional Cycladic houses and cave houses that are carved into the rock face on top of the cliff. It is set in a location which provides excellent views of the sunset over the caldera.
Oia typifies the white-painted houses of the Cyclades, in many cases built directly into niches which are cave houses used by crew of the ships, on the lip of the volcanic crater, between which are narrow alleys and blue-roofed churches with cupolas. The wealthy ship captains of the late 19th century built neo-classical mansions. These houses are seen built in succession one above the other. (source: wikipedia)
