This was a work commissioned by a couple of art collectors from Lyon.
Contemporary palette knife oil painting depicting a winter scene on Marshal Lyautey Square in Lyon, France.
The square of Marshal Lyautey (La place du Marechal-Lyautey) is situated in the 6th arrondissement of Lyon, at the eastern end of the course Franklin Roosevelt, on the left bank of the Rhone. It was set up in 1817 by Jean-Antoine Morand, engineer and architect of the eighteenth century. At the origin of its construction was a second bridge over the Rhone, which allowed the development of the area where is currently located the square.
The main element of the square is the monumental fountain, designed by the architect Antoine Desjardins, raised on a command of the city inhabitants, to thank Napoleon III for having established the disappearance of tolls on the bridges of the Rhone. The statuary was entrusted to renowned sculptor William Bonnet and was built in 1865.
The attention of passersby is especially attracted by the large statue of 3.85 m in Carrara marble, realised in August 1867. The head is dressed of a mural crown, she is draped in a Roman robe and represents the city of Lyon. Bonnet would have taken his wife as a model.
