Description
"Les Deux Magots Paris" by Mona Edulesco.
Modern impressionist palette knives oil painting on stretched canvas 50x70x4cm (20x27x1.5 inches), 2018.
This painting captures the animated terrace of the famous Parisian Café "Les Deux Magots". The last April when I visited Paris I had a Café there, did some croquis and I enjoyed the beautiful ambiance of this unique place...

Les Deux Magots is a famous café in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris, France. It once had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual élite of the city.
Les Deux Magots owes its name to the shop that used to stand in the same place. Bearing witness to this time are the two statues that adorn the restaurant.
Les Deux Magots has played an important part in Paris cultural life since 1884. Not mentioning the old days when Verlaine, Rimbaud and Mallarmé used to meet there, it has been visited by many renowned artists among whom were: Elsa Triolet, André Gide, Jean Giraudoux, Picasso, Fernand Léger, Prévert, Hemingway, Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Françoise Mallet-Joris.
Long before the Existentialists who were the “heynights” of Saint-Germain-des-Prés cellar clubs, the Surrealists gathered there under the aegis of André Breton.
Today, it is frequented by personalities from the world of arts and literature, as well as from the world of fashion and politics.
The Deux Magots Award, created in 1933 to bring talented and original writers to the public’s attention, is one of the oldest literary prizes.

"Magot" literally means "chinese figurine", where from the name of the café "Les Deux Magots". It was founded first in 1812 at 23 Rue de Buci as novelty shop and it was transferred to Place St-Germain-des-Prés to expand in 1873.
The two magots are the Asian statues installed on the central pillar of the famous Parisian café who have been watching for more than a hundred years on the two terraces of the Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The name was borrowed from a succesul play of that era, "Les Deux Magots de la Chine".

Mona, how marvelously the colours of the people sing with life against the richness of the blues and greens of the sky, café and trees. Such "Life" flows through this outstanding art piece, everywhere from the figures to the reflected light in the windows. Even the paving stones are humming with energy. I enjoy your works so much each time! L/F
