As reference for this painting I used a photo that I took in Park Guell, Barcelona during my trip in August. The painting captures in foreground a piece of Gaudi's serpentine mosaic bench and in background the top of Casa del Guarda and the view over Barcelona, rendered in an abstract stylized manner.
I have always loved to approach my urban paintings in a myriad of ways. I enjoy stylizing architectural forms in various manners. This has always been one of my goals, even a preoccupation from the time I was studying at the school of architecture until the present. The versatility of oil paint along with my prototypic work with palette knives allows me to play with the urban forms abstracting the city in an unconstrained manner.
The Park Güell is a public park system composed of gardens and architectonic elements located in Barcelona, Spain and built between 1900 and 1914.
Park Güell is the reflection of Antoni Gaudí's artistic plenitude, which belongs to his naturalist phase (first decade of the 20th century). During this period, the architect perfected his personal style through inspiration from organic shapes.
The undulation bench created by Antoni Gaudi is definitely one of the most widely admired elements in the Park Guell. Overlooking the city below, this sinuous bench is clad in ceramic tiles. A mix of sculpture, functionality and surface design, considered one of the great works of art of the 20th century.
