Description
"Paris Morning at Les Deux Magots » by Mona Edulesco.
Textural impasto palette knife oil painting on canvas, 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 inches).
This modern impressionism cityscape painting captures a frontal facade view of the famous Parisian Café "Les Deux Magots". Everytime I visit Paris I love to go there for a Café... :)
Les Deux Magots is a famous café in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris, France. It once had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual élite of the city.
Les Deux Magots owes its name to the shop that used to stand in the same place. Bearing witness to this time are the two statues that adorn the restaurant.
Les Deux Magots has played an important part in Paris cultural life since 1884. Not mentioning the old days when Verlaine, Rimbaud and Mallarmé used to meet there, it has been visited by many renowned artists among whom were: Elsa Triolet, André Gide, Jean Giraudoux, Picasso, Fernand Léger, Prévert, Hemingway, Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Françoise Mallet-Joris.
Long before the Existentialists who were the “heynights” of Saint-Germain-des-Prés cellar clubs, the Surrealists gathered there under the aegis of André Breton.
Today, it is frequented by personalities from the world of arts and literature, as well as from the world of fashion and politics.
The Deux Magots Award, created in 1933 to bring talented and original writers to the public’s attention, is one of the oldest literary prizes.

I love this, Mona! I love this looking back to that magnificent period in Paris when Picasso was finding his way, and was surrounded by the brilliant Parisian intellectuals and poets...Whenever I’m inParis I also tend to relive that era in my imagination. It holds a kind of Magic for us...the painting is lovely in the mix of Paris today, but the hint of nostalgia for those heady days in the past...
Mona Edulesco replied:
Such a beautiful comment and poetical description dear Chava. Magic indeed...and yes, I do feel the nostalgia you are talking about, Chava... everytime I visit Paris,as well... :)
