Description
"Lyon Rooftops" by Mona Edulesco.
ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING ON STRETCHED CANVAS, 31 x 16 x 1,5 IN (80x40x4CM) / 2015. Contemporary palette knife oil painting depicting the rooftops of Lyon city in France and The famous Tour Rose in the foreground.
The Vieux Lyon (English: Old Lyon) is the largest Renaissance district of Lyon in the 5th arrondissement. Covering an area of 24 hectares at the foot of the Fourviere hill, along the banks of the Saone river, it is one of Europe's most extensive Renaissance neighborhoods. This unique area of Gothic and Renaissance architecture was chosen by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
In the Middle Ages, when there were only a few parallel streets between the hill and the Saone, the first Traboules were built. Derived from the Latin trans-ambulare, meaning to pass through, Traboules are corridors through buildings and their courtyards, connecting one street directly with another. Visitors are delighted to discover an architectural heritage of galleries and spiral staircases in these secret passageways, as unexpected as they are unique.
The famous Tour rose in Lyon is situated on Rue du Boeuf in the Vieux Lyon district and is composed of an internal courtyard and a pinkish plaster tower, and built after plans by architect Sertio. This 16th-century building was originally the Maison du Crible. The 17th century portal is highly decorated, with bosses and ringed columns, and surmounted by a pediment decorated with a bas-relief which depicts the Nativity/Adoration of the Magi, attributed to Bologna.

An Incredible piece, Mona! Superb Contrast , the bleu's background the Crimson Red in the fore as it should be! The shadows so meticulously achieved by only the hand of a master with the Knife!

Love how you chose a narrow canvas to emphasize the tall, narrow buildings of this scene. Gorgeous work, Mona!! LF

Amazing how many people love your paintings - so very well deserved - I particularly love this one, the patterns, colors, and how you suggest so much detail and accuracy with a broad brush and knife!
