About Mona Edulesco
Mona Edulesco is a Romanian painter and architect who resides in Lyon, France and specializes in textured impasto palette knife oil paintings. Her preference for abstract cityscapes reflects her background in architecture and urban planning. Edulesco merges her experience in architectural concept drawings with the freedom and energy of palette knife painting into phantasmagorical textural impressionistic works.
"I call my style Textured Impressionism, with a mix of post-impressionist and expressionist influences and a semi-abstract manner of representation. It can be seen as a form of textural modern impressionism, as I use thick layers of oil paint to achieve a vibrant movement in my works.
I am absolutely fascinated by the explosive thick textures and the intense chromatic that you can explore and reinvent by working the medium of oil painting. The palette knife technique that I developed over the years confers expressiveness to my paintings and an amazing three dimensional aspect.
I love to work with heavy textures and to achieve vibrant dynamic color schemes. I mostly use a variety of palette knives in the realization of my works, sometimes in combination with brushes.
Most of my oeuvre focuses on the city life and urban spaces, including urban landscapes works at large-scale. In addition, I enjoy applying and developing my skills through the exploration of other genres and techniques - flowers, landscapes and interiors, as well as portraits and live model drawings. I work predominantly in oil, but create also works in watercolor, ink, acrylic, pastel and charcoal.
I love to wander from one city to the next, to discover new places and to revisit the old and then to express these emotional experiences in my paintings. My professional training as an Architect has allowed me to study in depth and to grasp the City subject with all of its complexity. In my urban landscapes I merge the experience of architectural drawing concepts with the freedom, the strength and the energy that Palette Knife Painting allows me to express in a world of tones and colourful hues.
My work has different orientations, and can be figurative or abstract. Regarding the creative process of my work, I consider that a painting evolves in its progress. The main idea can be an emotional impulse, a special moment in my life or a place that particularly touched me. Then I try to interpret my subject to express and convey to the viewer the emotional essence.
The art, since childhood has always held a fascination for me, being influenced on this path by both my parents- my mother is an architect and my father a professional painter. I began formal painting and drawing lessons at a very early age. I obtained a graduate certificate in Art and Design from the Fine Arts College N.Tonitza in Bucharest, my hometown. I continued my studies in Architecture at Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urban Planning in Bucharest, Romania. Afterwards I earned a master degree in urban planning in Lyon, France. During this decade, I complemented the architecture studies with live drawing and painting classes. In 2011, I embraced my life-long passion for painting and I returned to a full-time career as an artist. In the period that has followed, I have established a flourishing practice in art, as a painter. My works can be found in numerous private collections throughout the world, in Europe, United States of America, Canada, Australia..."
I am a member of Maison des Artistes Paris, the Architects Artists French association Ligne et couleur and the Taylor Foundation - Paris, France.
